Rats and Mice
Mice and rats in Thurston County homes and other structures may cause issues year-round, but the number of infestations increase significantly when the weather gets cooler and food sources diminish outdoors. Rats are very skilled at living alongside humans and often go unnoticed until the population expands. They are very prolific.
Wasps near the home can ruin outdoor activities and make yardwork difficult. While they rarely go out of their way to sting, wasps may become hostile if threatened or disturbed.
It is highly likely that you will not even know when your home has Western Subterranean Termites in areas around Thurston County, because they keep themselves very well hidden.
Odorous House Ants
Kitchens and bathrooms are common areas for these tiny ants, also known as “sugar ants”. Depending on the nest location, they can be active year-round, but infestations tend to be worse Mar-Sept.
Carpenter ants are often seen inside of homes throughout the spring and summer. These may either be worker ants foraging for food or reproductive ants leaving the nest to mate.
Spiders are among the most prevalent household pests. Despite their bad rep, spiders in the PNW are highly beneficial and carry very little concern when it comes to danger to humans.
Anobiid beetles prefer lumber with high moisture content. Infestations often go undetected, but can be identified by a number of small exit holes, created by the adult beetles when they mature and exit the wood.

Our Approach to Pest Control
We pride ourselves on using responsible, yet effective pest management methods and put a strong emphasis on education, both for ourselves and our customers. Venables Pest Management uses a pest control method called Integrated Pest Management, also known as IPM. IPM is based on three fundamental beliefs:
- Apply control measures only when necessary.
- Manage pest problems with a thorough understanding of the pest and its nature, and then disrupt its needs by reducing its ability to eat, drink, and secure harborage.
- When control measures are used, select those that pose the least risk to people and the surrounding environment.
